Numerical Expositions: Genesis 4:15

And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.  And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

- Gen. 4:15 (KJV)

God shows Cain some mercy because the consequence for Cain should have been immediate death for murdering his brother.  The Lord places a mark, or a sign, upon Cain so that people would leave him alone.  The sign was that whoever killed Cain would face seven times the consequences that Cain received when he killed Abel.  Whenever someone saw Cain, then they would not murder him because they saw how much of a sorry state Cain was in for murdering Abel.  Allow for God to dole out vengeance instead of putting things into your hands by murdering someone.  God sees who have wronged you.  Let it go because that person that wronged you will eventually have to deal with the consequences down the road.  God's judgment never fails.

Numerical Breakdown:  (4) To gain instruction, listen to the voice of the Lord.  (6) To expose evil, choose not to murder anyone.  (1) Follow God or face the consequences.  (5) Stay in God's presence or become a spectacle in the sight of man.
